As a queer college student, I’m not out to everyone, not even everyone in my family. Depending on one’s story, whether they’re out or not may have to do with timing, but also other circumstances like religion, fear, and availability.
While coming out can certainly be life changing, it is difficult and an everyday process. For example, telling people I minor in LGBTQ Studies is often stereotyped with identifying within the community, so I don’t always mention it. So many small conversations can hint at one’s LGBTQ identity, that one almost has to sensor themselves.
The decision to come out is totally a personal one so don’t let anyone pressure, whether it be a partner, friend, or even a family member. And remember, you are you, and you are valid.
