On Spectrums

On this blog, I’ve talked a lot about gender identities and queer identities, and while I’ve written on fluidity, I never really addressed the fact that a lot of these identities run on spectrum, rather than fixed point. I’ve made an diagram to show you what I mean.

The spectrums I’ve mentioned here are sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, romantic orientation, and sexuality. Check it out:

Check out this link to see it viewed with hyperlinks for more information on the identities:

Additionally here‘s a site you can chart your own spectrums, and here and here are two videos about spectrums by Ashley Mardell.

I hope this helps you think about how your multifaceted identities don’t have to be defined at one point and also recognize that they can always change!

  1. I agree “they can always change.” Sexual orientation is not fixed; it is fluid.

I wrote a short essay (500 words) called “What Causes Sexual Orientation: Nature and Nurture.” If you would like to read it, I am open to any feedback: https://christopherjohnlindsay.wordpress.com/2016/12/16/sexual-orientation-nature-nurture/
